Alan GarfieldAlan Garfield

Alan Garfield is director of the Bisignano Art Gallery and chair of the Digital Art and Design Department.  Most students who are not in his department know him as “that guy” who takes students to Europe on short-term study trips. He came to UD 19 years ago after teaching at UW-Madison.  One thing he enjoys most about being the director of the Bisignano Art Gallery is the number of partnerships that are formed throughout the year.  Alan arranges exhibits that focus on specific academic departments – academic departments that normally might not think of themselves as gallery-worthy – such as sociology, English, criminal justice, math, natural and applied sciences, philosophy, and history as well as the Dubuque community. The gallery becomes a learning lab for the museum studies classes that he teaches. Students assist in every aspect of preparing for a show, hanging, lighting, communication, catalog preparation etc. When Alan is not hard at work on campus or traveling, you can find him enjoying a cup of coffee with his wife, Phyllis, on their deck.  Alan’s performing arts colleagues salute him on a job well done keeping the art gallery in tip-top condition with excellent exhibits.

Will destroying all the spinning wheels be enough to save the king’s daughter? Break Forth, O Beauteous Light: An Evening of Lessons and Carols

JOHN AND ALICE BUTLER HALL

In its sixth year, UD’s Department of Fine and Performing Arts celebrates the birth of Christ through this annual Advent concert presentation featuring the talents of the UD Concert Choir, Chamber Singers, and Women’s Choir, directed by Kristen Eby, assistant professor of music, and the Ken Kilian Brass Ensemble from Platteville, Wisconsin.  University of Dubuque president, Jeffrey F. Mr. Burns, a post electric play by Anne Washburn
BABKA THEATRE

Shortly after an unspecified apocalyptic event, a group of survivors gather together and begin to attempt to recount the episode "Cape Feare" of the television show The Simpsons. The second act picks up with the same group seven years later, who have now formed a theatrical troupe that specializes in performing Simpsons episodes, with commercials and all. The final act is set an additional 70 years in the future. The same episode of The Simpson’s, now a familiar myth, has been reworked into a musical pageant, with the story, characters, and morals repurposed to fit the artistic and dramatic needs of a culture still reeling from destruction of civilization and the near-extinction of humanity decades earlier.
