• Nexus has recently completed a railway signalling project with Bombardier. Click here to read a case study on the project.

• We’ve enhanced our family of serial development kits that provide all the necessary tools to build a simulated portable data system and test its features and benefits. Click here for more.

• If you are new to Nexus, why not introduce yourself to the company by viewing our welcome video, filmed at this year’s ESC UK.

Our white paper on 'Transferring Data in Non-Networked Applications' is still available – click here for a copy.

Nexus will be exhibiting at MEDTEC UK, on April 27/28 - find us on stand 2250

We will also be at the Embedded Masterclass in Reading on 11 May.

Dear Michael, A Nexus data device in the snow - cartoon (2).jpg

If you are based in the UK, as most of our readers are, you have certainly experienced a hostile environment over the last couple of weeks – thanks to the snowy conditions! And hostile environments are something we know a little bit about here at Nexus, so we are taking a look at some of the uses our tokens and receptacles find in harsh applications in this month’s newsletter. First, we have a story about our new token system, called Bar, which saves space in the OEM’s panel and features IP-67 compliance, ESD (Electro Static Reduction) and a host of military grade harsh environment ratings. There’s also a case study on portable memory fuel management, where our tokens get some seriously rough treatment! Finally, if you have five minutes to spare don’t forget to catch up on the adventures of Mneme the intrepid memory token in coffee break cartoons and jokes

Case study: Managing precision fuel management

In the fuel management industry a lack of precision costs money Fueling - 1 (2).JPG– every user needs to be identified accurately every time. And every time they re-fuel it needs to be recorded and billed correctly. It’s little wonder then that when MIS Fuel Monitoring Ltd needed a method of providing their clients with a secure, mobile device for identification; they turned to Nexus GB to provide the necessary portable memory tokens. The system provides security and consumption data, which in turn allows for good management practice and optimal fuel usage.

“We chose Nexus’ memory keys as our principal contact method because they permit access conditions to be programmed on to the key flexibly,” explained Stephen Hannan, sales director of MIS.

Externally mounted memory set to save OEMs spaceNEX037 - BAR new CIK system - web copy.jpg

We’ve just released the Datakey Electronics Bar Series of rugged, portable memory products, consisting of a memory token and mating receptacles. The Bar receptacle’s on surface mounting system allows Original Equipment Manufacturers (OEMs) to add a portable data carrier to their product, without giving up large amounts of panel space or interior volume. The series also features an IP-67 immersion rating and is designed to meet the requirements of the most demanding military and industrial applications.

The unique on-surface mounting style minimises the amount of interior space required, as only the receptacle's pins extend inside the OEM device. In addition, the Bar receptacle has a small footprint of only 5.3 cm2. The receptacle is secured using two screws and an adhesive gasket, which also contributes to the Bar's IP-67 rating and provides a tamper-evident installation.

About us: Established in 1986 Nexus GB is Datakey Electronics’ UK and Ireland exclusive distributor for portable, rugged keys and tokens containing non-volatile memory. These reliable and re-programmable items provide data transport, security, and access control solutions even in extreme environments where other methods, such as USB memory, would not survive. Furthermore, distinct from consumer-like memory solutions, they are a well established product that will not become obsolete as technology progresses. As a result, they are commonly used by design engineers working on long term projects, with more than three million units currently in UK service.
