Opened by U.N. Secretary-General, Mr. Ban Ki-moon, on the occasion of the International Day of Persons with Disabilities, on December 3, at UN Headquarters in New York, a briefing session for the delegates of the 137 signatory states of the Convention was jointly organized by G3ict and UNITAR, in cooperation with the Secretariat for the Convention and the Global Alliance for ICT and Development.  

The seminar aimed to contribute to the rapid and effective implementation of the Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities in general and its digital accessibility agenda by:

  • providing an overview over the provisions and the status of the Convention;
  • introducing participants into the Digital Accessibility Agenda of the Convention;
  • reviewing the practical implications for signatory states with regard to provisions pertaining to digital accessibility;
  • sharing knowledge among key stakeholders on how ICT accessibility mandates can be best met, and the role that ICT vendors, users and policy makers can play in support its implementation; and
  • presenting tools and resources available to policy makers and civil society to monitor and implement the Digital Accessibility Agenda of the Convention (more)

, 137 states around the world have signed the Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities; 44 states have ratified it, including Sweden and the Republic of Korea.

Find detailed information and lists of disability organizations, with contact information, for each of the signatory states, as well as basic ICT factors.
