Postdoctoral Fellowship in Mental Health and Substance Abuse Services
Purpose

The goal of the Postdoctoral MHSAS Fellowship Program is to encourage and facilitate the postdoctoral development of psychologists who maintain a professional focus on research related to mental health and substance abuse services for ethnic minorities. The program seeks to accomplish the following objectives:

  • Improve the research, clinical, and policy base for culturally competent mental health and substance abuse
  • Increase the number of ethnic minority mental health and substance abuse service clinicians, researchers, and policy-makers focusing on ethnic minority populations, and
  • Increase knowledge and awareness of issue related to ethnic minority mental health and substance abuse treatment.

Basic Eligibility

  • Applicants must be American citizens or permanent resident aliens with an alien registration card (I-151 or I-551). Individuals on temporary or student visas are not eligible.
  • A conferred doctoral degree in psychology in the last five years
  • The ability to demonstrate support from an established sponsor
  • African American, Alaskan Native, American Indian, Asian American, Hispanic/Latino, Native Hawaiian, and Pacific Islander students are especially encouraged to apply.

American Psychological Association Minority Fellowship Program (MFP)

Mental Health and Substance Abuse Services Fellowship
A federally funded program to support doctoral training in mental health and substance abuse services

  • To promote culturally competent mental health and substance abuse services provided to ethnic minority populations
  • To increase the number of ethnic minority psychologists delivering mental health and substance abuse services to ethnic minority populations
  • To increase the general knowledge and research of issues related to ethnic minority mental health and substance abuse treatment

Basic Eligibility

  • Applicants must be American citizens or permanent resident aliens with an alien registration card (I-151 or I-551). Individuals on temporary or student visas are not eligible.
  • Applicants must demonstrate a strong commitment to a career in ethnic minority mental health and substance abuse services. This commitment must be demonstrated in the application essays, graduate school curriculum or training plan, practicum and internship training experiences, and thesis and dissertation topics developed.
  • Applicants should be enrolled full-time in an APA-accredited doctoral program. Students not currently enrolled in an APA-accredited doctoral program may apply as long as they gain acceptance into an APA-accredited doctoral program for the fall term immediately following the application deadline.
  • African American, Alaskan Native, American Indian, Asian American, Hispanic/Latino, Native Hawaiian, and Pacific Islander students are especially encouraged to apply.
  • This fellowship is aimed at students specializing in clinical, counseling, school, or other programs associated with the delivery of mental health services.

Minority Fellowship Program

About the AAMFT/SAMHSA Minority Fellowship Program

The AAMFT Minority Fellowship Program's objective is to expand the delivery of culturally competent mental health and substance abuse services to underserved minority populations, and to increase the number of doctoral level culturally competent ethnic minority Marriage and Family therapists. Our goal is to do this by providing financial support and professional guidance to ethnic minority graduate students pursuing doctoral degrees in Marriage and Family therapy. Our mission–consistent with the Surgeon General's Report on Mental Health and other federal initiatives to reduce health disparities—is to increase the pool of talented, culturally competent doctoral-level researchers, teachers and practitioners dedicated to assisting underserved minorities.

Basic Eligibility

  • Applicants must be American citizens or permanent residents with an permanent residents registration card (I-151 or I-551). Individuals on temporary or student visas are not eligible.
  • Applicants must demonstrate a strong commitment to a career in minority mental health and substance abuse services. This commitment must be demonstrated in the application essays, graduate school curriculum or training plan, practicum and internship training experiences, and thesis and dissertation topics developed.
  • Applicants should be enrolled full-time in a COAMFTE accredited doctoral program.
  • African American, Alaskan Native, American Indian, Asian American, Hispanic/Latino, Native Hawaiian, and Pacific Islander students are especially encouraged to apply.
  • This fellowship is aimed at Marriage and Family Therapy doctoral students specializing in providing substance abuse and mental health services to minority and underserved populations.

AAMFT/MFP Financial Support and Training Benefits

  • Financial Support (3 year maximum. Must be renewed annually)
  • $20,000.00 stipend per student to be used for all related costs of doctoral program attendance and training.
  • Financial support for AAMFT/MFP’s Winter and Summer Training Institutes which provide training specific to providing cultural competence, mental health and substance abuse services to underserved minority populations.
  • Travel support to the AAMFT Conference
  • $1500.00 to cover all costs of attendance at the AAMFT Annual Conference--attendance at the conference will provide continuing education and cross-collaboration with faculty and other leaders in the field, as well as an opportunity to present their work.
  • Access to information and resources
  • Lifetime network of professional association with Marriage and Family Therapists interested in ethnic minority mental health and services

American Academy of Periodontology Foundation Educator Scholarship

AAP Educator Scholarship

Application Deadline: July 1

The $50,000 AAP Educator Scholarship provides financial relief to a student intending to pursue a career as a full-time teacher at a U.S. periodontal program upon graduation from a U.S. periodontal postdoctoral training program. The scholarship is intended to provide help with tuition and living expenses during the training period and may also be used for debt reduction. The Educator Scholar must commit to spending one year as a full-time periodontal educator at a U.S. program for each year he/she receives the award.

American Academy of Periodontology Foundation Education Fellowship

AAP Foundation Education Fellowship Funded by OMNI Preventive Care

Application Deadline: May 31

This $15,000 Education Fellowship funded by OMNI Preventive Care, a 3M ESPE Company, encourages and rewards interest in periodontal research. The award is provided directly to the student and is intended to be a supplement to, and not a replacement for, any remuneration he/she may otherwise receive. The successful applicant is chosen based, in part, on a research proposal that should examine prevention of periodontitis and/or gingivitis. Other factors in the selection include the applicant’s academic standing and passion for education and research. AAP Student members in their first or second year of a U.S. periodontal postdoctoral program may apply for the fellowship.

The recipient of the Kramer Scholar Award for Excellence receives $10,000. Applicants for the Kramer Award must be third-year full-time periodontal students at accredited U.S. periodontal programs and nominated by their periodontal program director.

Bud and Linda Tarrson Fellowship

Application Deadline: May 1

The recipient of the Bud and Linda Tarrson Fellowship receives a $30,000 award ($10,000 per year for up to three years). Candidates must be either a full-time faculty member at the instructor or assistant level or a part-time faculty member at a U.S. training institution and must be nominated by their periodontal program director. Applications are mailed to all periodontal program directors and deans in March.
