Understanding Soil to Protect Our Planet

Desert Research Institute's underground research facility located in Boulder City began DRI lysimeter.jpgconstruction in early March 2007. The facility houses a series of scientific instruments known as weighing lysimeters - large soil containers which rest on sensitive, underground scales. The containers are weighed continuously and the data is collected to determine the different effects of various environmental conditions on the soil.

A crop can be grown in the lysimeters soil and the record DRI Lysimeters.jpgof weight changes during each day provide an accurate way to determine how much water the crop loses by the combination of soil surface, evaporation and transpiration by plants.

Each lysimeter is contained in a separate room with a tunnel that connects each room, DRI Lysimeter.jpgleading scientists from one side of the facility to the other. The lysimeters were built so that the outer walls of the containers were not touching any part of the facility allowing it to balance freely on the underground scale. This is generally considered one of the most reliable techniques due to its simplicity, providing the most direct results.
