JeffAlexander.jpgJeff Alexander is an award winning author and a former environmental journalist.  He covered Great Lakes issues for the past 20 years for several Michigan newspapers.  He currently works for the National Wildlife Federation's Great lakes office.  His new book, "Pandora's Locks: The Opening of the Great Lakes-St.Lawrence Seaway" was published this year.  It explores how allowing ocean freighters into the Great Lakes 50 years ago unleashed one of the world's worst environmental disasters.

    "Ocean freighters that access the Great lakes via the Seaway have imported 57 invasive species to these freshwater seas over the past 50 years. Those species have caused more damage than the Exxon Valdez oil spill, which is widely recognized as one of America's worst environmental nightmares

dave.jpgDr. Beach's America's Best Beaches list for 2009 is in and not a freshwater beach to be found.  In this week's editorial, Great Lakes Best Beaches, Dave Dempsey offers his suggestions for the top three Great Lakes Beaches, what would your's be? 

 
"Dr. Beach has no room on his list, apparently, for freshwater beaches.  But those of us who know and love the Great Lakes do.  And it's time we developed and published the Great Lakes Best Beaches List."
