Yes, we are talking about a revolution- a Homegrown Revolution, which is just 1 of the 4 films we are excited to bring to the Madison community. Join us tomorrow night at the Majestic Theatre at 7pm as we host the Wild and Scenic Environmental Film Festival, sponsored by Patagonia.

Tickets are on sale at both local Fontana Stores, online, and the River Alliance office. If you are waiting until the last minute, the box office will open at 6:30pm. Tickets are $10 for the screening, and $25 for the screening and reception. As a special bonus, all $25 ticket buyers automatically become members of the River Alliance of Wisconsin!

Help Protect our Waterways—Install Rain Barrels

Well the rainwater is free, but the rain barrels are not. Rain barrels are a great way to collect rainwater and help out the environment at the same time. (Even combat invasive species.)

Sustain Dane’s award-winning RainReserve rain barrels will be on sale at the upcoming Wisconsin Public Television Garden Expo, held at the Alliant Energy Center in Madison on February 13, 14, & 15.  You can save $15 on a single barrel system, and $20 on a double barrel system. A convenient way to purchase one is to pre-order at www.RainForDane.org and save time at the event.

Rain barrels are an easy and inexpensive way to help control surface runoff that washes contaminants into our waterways.  Using rain barrels is a simple step that most any homeowner can take to help control the proliferation of unwanted aquatic vegetation, including invasive species. Plus you’ll have the great side benefit of a free supply of natural, untreated water for your plants or garden. Madison-based non-profit Sustain Dane developed RainReserve as part of a community-based initiative to help protect water resources. The systems are designed to be the most advanced and eco-friendly rain barrel system available.

Speaking of Invasives

Interested in invasive species identification?

The National Institute of Invasive Species Science is seeking individuals interested in participating in a two-dayloosestrife_flwr_lrg.gif training and monitoring event at the University of Wisconsin-Madison Arboretum, May 30-31.  The training will include instruction on invasive species identification, GPS use, monitoring protocols, and data management.

If you would be interested in learning more or participating as a citizen monitor or as an expert on invasive species, please contact Alycia Crall (crall@wisc.edu; 970-227-3310).

For additional information visit www.citsci.org or visit http://www.wisconsinrivers.org/index.php?page=content&mode=view&id=167 to learn more about aquatic invasive species.
