HEALTH AND WELLNESS SPOTLIGHT

Getting Your Teeth Cleaned Can Save Your Life

A growing number of dental patients today are being diagnosed with periodontal disease.  This the same disease that our parents erroneously referred to gum disease.  Periodontal disease is not a disease of the gums but actually a disease of the bone around the roots of the teeth.  As a person loses the bone that supports the teeth the gums recede with the bone to which they are attached.  Eventually the teeth can become lose as the body rejects them and they start to fall out.  Eighty percent of individual with periodontal disease inherited the gene for it.  Often they report one or both of their parents were denture wearers.   Others can contribute to the disease to smoking or a compromised immune system.  Many have two or more of the contributing factors.

What causes the bone to deteriorate?  The calcium in saliva and a person’s diet calcifies plaque onto the tooth and roots and provides an ideal home for damaging bacteria.  These bacteria release a toxin that erodes the bone away.  The bacteria enter the blood stream and travels to the heart looking for previously damaged areas where it can easily attach itself.  The bacteria then begin to grow and can ultimately trigger a heart attack and potentially result in death.

How to prevent death and bone loss

The treatment of periodontal disease is simple.  If the calcified deposits on the teeth, referred to as calculus or tartar, are removed on a regular basis then the bacteria has no place to live.  A visit to your dental office will accomplish this.  Once the tartar is removed by your dentist or dental hygienist and the bacteria flushed away it takes three to four months for the levels of bacteria to build back up to a sufficient level to being damaging the bone again.  Your dentist will most likely schedule you every 3 to 4 months for treatment of your periodontal disease.  A few hours a year is a very small investment to stop you from losing your teeth and preventing a heart attack.
