HEALTH AND WELLNESS   SPOTLIGHT

THERE IS ANOTHER SCREENING EXAM AS IMPORTANT AS AN ANNUAL MAMMOGRAM

Most women are well educated about the need for breast cancer screening with regular annual mammograms after age 40 but far fewer are aware of another cancer threat which can be prevented with proper screening.

Colorectal cancer is the second leading cause of cancer related deaths among Americans. Shockingly, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention estimate up to 60% of deaths from colorectal cancer could be prevented if everyone age 50 and older were regularly screened.

A colonoscopy is one of the most powerful tools we have to prevent colorectal cancer. Most colorectal cancers start out as non-cancerous growths called polyps in the lining of the colon or rectum. A colonoscopy allows the doctor to see these polyps and immediately remove them before they have the
chance to turn into cancer or at a very early stage when the disease is highly curable.

If you are 50 or over, we urge you to call Pearl Women’s Center at 503.771.1883 and schedule this life-saving, screening procedure. A colonoscopy takes about 30 minutes to complete and is performed under sedation to ensure your comfort.
