Holiday Health Tips (To Do Year Round):
Surprisingly Easy, Super Effective Tools to Take Care Of Yourself

Even though we exercise, eat right and get enough sleep stress can sometimes make itself known in the form of headaches, stiff necks and sore backs. Keeping stress down not only helps us feel better and think more clearly, but makes us more immune to whatever bugs are floating around. There are so many ways to fight stress, I picked a few tools that I recommend to all of my clients and practice myself.

Here are things you can do to help yourself feel better on a daily basis:

(Editors Note: our continued article from December.)

3.    Body Rolling w/Foam Roller – I have all of my clients get a foam roller at a fitness store. I even bought a case one year and gave them away because they are so great. I am a big believer in the benefits of massage. This is a great way to treat yourself between visits to your massage therapist.

I give my clients a series of movements to address different issues. For example – tight chest muscles from sitting at a computer: lie lengthwise on the roller (head at one end & tailbone at the other) and open arms to the side. Pretend you are making snow angels with your arms. Then, circle arms several times in both directions to loosen the shoulder muscles.

4.    Foot Strengthening/Stretching – We stuff out feet in shoes all day and give little thought to actually moving, using or stretching the muscles and bones of our feet. Neglected feet can be a source of many problems, such as back and hip pain. Gyrotonic and Gyrokinesis are systems that use every body part, and have great exercises for the feet.

To help loosen your toes (and to prevent bunions and hammertoes), sit on a chair with one foot crossed over the top of the other leg. While cradling your heel with one hand, place a finger between each toe with the other hand. It may be uncomfortable, which means you should be doing this. Gently circle your toes and foot in both directions while gently pulling out with your fingers.

Give these a try and give yourself time to notice the changes you feel when done. If you want to know more or need clarification, feel free to give me a call.
