____________________ HEALTHCARE SPOTLIGHT Pearl Health Center and Healing Garden Goal Setters, 2009 has arrived and so have the 2009 New Year's resolutions! New Year's Resolutions, too often evolve into nothing more than short-term annual goals. Most people forget about them the day after they are made. Whether your goal is to get back in race shape, achieve a personal record, lose weight, avoid injury or just eat more vegetables, the key to New Year's resolution success is consistency. Consistency depends on maintaining your motivation and staying injury free. Dr. John Howell, Chiropractic Physician at the Pearl Health Center recommends the following: Five helpful tips to maintain long-term motivation: 1. Focus on attainable goals. If you are trying to increase your running speed, than your "short-term" goal should be to lower your time to 38, then 36, then 35 minutes. Being unrealistic with your goals will only lead to frustration and burnout. 2. Sign up and focus on a goal Events or goals that are 3 to 4 months down the road allow you the necessary time to build healthy habits. For example, weight loss goals take time. If you want to lose 10-15 pounds allow yourself 2 months to achieve your goal. A healthy rate of weight loss is no more than 2 pounds a week! 3. Break up your goals into achievable steps. To keep your focus and motivation on the "big race", run a couple of "smaller" races 3 to 4 weeks apart. These races will help test your training and act as stepping stones to your goal event. 4. If you are unsure of what training you should be doing, seek out guidance by a professional coach. In order to maintain faith in your effort, make sure you learn how to prevent injuries and hold yourself accountable to your schedule (sometimes we all need somebody looking over are shoulder). 5. Form support groups. Meeting with friends, running groups, exercise groups, will get you motivated to get off the couch and out the door. A set time and day always helps me plan my day around a meet. When looking for a health care professional, make sure you choose someone who has an understanding of these tips. They should be articulate, motivating and well grounded in the latest research in health and behavior change. The best health professional will be able to give you cross training exercises, complement your fitness goals, while decreasing frustration, injury, and giving up on those New Years resolutions.
