Be Kind to Your Colon
How chipper is your colon? That is the perfect question for you to answer in March, when Legacy Good Samaritan Medical Center takes part in National Colorectal Cancer Awareness Month. Colon and rectal cancers are cancers of the digestive system. They are the third most commonly diagnosed cancers in men and women in the U.S., excluding skin cancers. Proper screening is the key to preventing colorectal cancer as well as to treating it successfully. Good news: Ninety percent of colorectal cancers are curable with early detection. Yet colorectal cancers are the second leading cause of cancer-related death in men and women. Your colon deserves your attention. Timely and appropriate screening for colorectal cancer is the key to prevention, treatment and survival. Legacy Good Sam's Colorectal Cancer Center of Excellence recommends that you have regular colonoscopy cancer screening tests if you: --Are age 50 and have no symptoms; --Are age 45 and African American; --Are 10 years younger than a member of your immediate family at his or her diagnosis of colon or rectal cancer; --Are younger than 50 but have a personal history of breast, ovarian or uterine cancer; or a personal history of intestinal polyps, inflammatory bowel disease or colorectal cancer. Colorectal cancers don't necessarily wait until you hit age 50. If you have symptoms such as blood in your stool, unexplained abdominal pain or feelings of incomplete evacuation after bowel movements, contact your primary care physician or call Legacy Physician Referral at 503-335-3500 and ask about cancer screening locations. Here's how screening can serve a double function of cancer prevention and diagnosis: Most cancerous growths in the colon or rectum begin as abnormal growths called polyps. A polyp is a non-cancerous tumor that sometimes develops into cancer, in a process that typically takes 10 or 15 years. During a colonoscopy, a gastroenterologist - a physician specializing in diseases of the digestive tract - uses a fiber optic camera to examine the inner lining of the rectum and the full length of the colon, looking for these raised areas or growths. During the screening itself, the gastroenterologist can remove polyps and growths. They're out before they have time to turn into cancer. So be kind to your colon. Colon cancers are preventable, treatable and, when diagnosed early, highly beatable. Talk to your doctor about scheduling a cancer screening. The nonprofit Legacy Health System includes your neighbor, Legacy Good Samaritan (1015 N.W. 22nd Ave.), as well as Legacy Emanuel and Emanuel Children's (N. Portland), Legacy Meridian Park (Tualatin), Legacy Mount Hood (Gresham) and Legacy Salmon Creek (Vancouver, Wash.) medical centers and Legacy Primary Care Specialty Clinics. Legacy sponsors classes and support groups, many free of charge. The Pearl District is home to some of the best Health and Wellness Providers in the city: Allergy, Asthma & Dermatology Associates
