HEALTH AND WELLNESS SPOTLIGHT

As First Lady Obama engages her task force on childhood obesity to make a stand for a fitter, healthier nation, Pearl District-based nonprofit Shaping America’s Youth (SAY) is poised to support these efforts.  Established in 2003, SAY has used grassroot methods to collect national data and develop community-based solutions to the problem of childhood obesity.

SAY recognizes that all sectors of society - families, community, healthcare, educators, businesses, legislators and civic leaders - have responsibilities to support and recognize each others’ efforts to improve fitness & nutrition for youth. They will soon publish their grassroots data, which charts a specific course of action for each stakeholder. SAY also provides a variety of resources on their website, including funding opportunities, programs, events, news articles, and reports/academic articles relating to childhood obesity.

An Oregonian article from March 10th offers a local perspective of the situation. SAY looks forward to working with the First Lady and others to improve the health of all children and envisions healthier generations to come.
