The audience pitches in too, with 5 playwrights and choreographers being raffled off to five lucky audience members who will get to select the theme of the work being commissioned. HEALTH AND WELLNESS SPOTLIGHT

The Bar Method Comes To Portland’s Pearl District!

The Bar Method is an hour-long workout class that incorporates the use of a ballet bar to lengthen, strengthen and sculpt the body. The Bar Method uses the principles of interval training and physical therapy to effectively work all the major muscle groups, elevate the heart rate and efficiently burn fat. Once the muscles have been worked to exhaustion, they are stretched out, giving students a long, lean dancer’s body.

Two local residents, Denise Burchard and Meghann Markham, are thrilled to bring The Bar Method to Portland. Both women never considered themselves “exercise class-type people” until discovering the benefits of The Bar Method. Denise, who had suffered knee and ankle injuries in gymnastics as a youth, and Meghann, who had soccer-related knee injuries, found that The Bar Method helped them strengthen their bodies, stabilize their joints, and attain a long, lean, slimmer look without bulking up or aggravating previous injuries.

The Bar Method was founded on the technique of Lotte Berk, a German ballerina, who after injuring her back got the idea of combining her ballet bar routines with her rehabilitative therapy to form an exercise system.

Burr Leonard, the founder of The Bar Method, studied at the Lotte Berk Method studio in Manhattan in the ‘80s and sought the help of physical therapists to rework the exercises in her own studios to target students’ muscles without impacting their joints. She has continued to work with physical therapists to evolve the workout and keep the exercises intense but safe for nearly 20 years, creating The Bar Method of today.

Through The Bar Method Portland Denise and Meghan look forward to bringing similar benefits to their clients and creating a community of friendship and fitness in the Pearl.

The Bar Method will open in February 2010 at the corner of NW 9th and NW Hoyt Street. Learn more and signup for newsletters and opening announcements at http://Portland.BarMethod.com.
