HEALTH AND WELLNESS SPOTLIGHT
The Need for Massage
by Melissa Tebow LMT
We live such busy stressful lives, it can be hard to find the time (and money) for a massage. But why is it so important? Close to 90% of disease is stress related and massage can help! Research shows that massage helps to decrease stress and anxiety, increases relaxation, gives peace of mind, increases circulation and blood flow to the entire body, decreases blood pressure, reduces fatigue and increases concentration, releases endorphins - the body’s natural painkiller, and helps to promote good sleep, as well as a multitude of other benefits. Massage can help decrease the dependency on medications and needs for visits to the doctor. With the potential to aid a person mentally, emotionally, and spiritually, there’s no doubt everybody can benefit from massage. The benefits of massage are most noticeable with regular consistent massage. As a preventative measure it’s recommended to get a massage every 4-6 weeks for optimal health. I know you may be thinking wow, how am I going to manage that! But we need to remember that regular massage is a huge investment in our health and view it as part of our overall health plan. Money does play a part as well, but when you think about how massage can help manage stress, decrease fatigue-making you feel more energetic and help promote good sleep you can think about cutting out that $4 cup of coffee at your favorite coffee shop or think about how much you will save on fewer doctors visit and less of a need for medications. Budgeting is the key, a massage every 4 weeks breaks down to $2-3 a day. There are many different massages you can get that will be very beneficial too you. You can go simple and easy with a nice relaxation massage. Or you can heat it up some with my personal favorite, a hot stone massage. The heat from the stones sinks deep into the muscles giving you the ultimate relaxation experience. Deep tissue is great if you have really tight muscles and lots of knots that need to be worked out. For those mothers-to-be most massage therapist are also trained in pregnancy massage. A great treat for those swollen feet and sore low backs that come with pregnancy. Whatever your needs you are sure to find a massage that will be a perfect fit and bring great benefits to your health and over all well-being.
