Is it Good to “Feel the Burn”?
We all know that we need to move our bodies every day. Exercise needs to be considered in the same daily rituals as showering and brushing our teeth. It gives us zest and endurance for life. Sometimes we have to squeeze movement in where ever we can – a 10 minute walk, a few shoulder stretches at our desk. When we do make time to workout, it’s common to think that “If I’m not sore the next day, I didn’t work hard enough.” So we go for the burn. We do too many reps with the same muscle groups and can’t walk properly or bend over and pick up the laundry without pain for three days. The problem with “the burn” is that we create a whole new set of issues and it can actually cause a back slide. The burn can cause knots, trigger points and muscle tightness which can result in poor movement patterns, muscle imbalances, joint pain and even injuries. Understandably, the soreness leads to avoidance of exercise and the cycle starts over with the desire to “go for the burn” to make up for lost time. Exercise should feel good. The ideal workout incorporates all of the muscle groups, breathing and balance. It should leave us feeling energized and peaceful – not sore and beat up. An awareness of the muscles worked rather than pain should be the goal. This is the foundation of movement systems such as Pilates and Gyrotonic/Gyrokinesis. Perfecting these movements takes time and focus, but the payoff will last a lifetime.
