Super Summer
We are just putting the wraps on one of our busiest, most impactful summer seasons ever and have just begun all of our school based programming. From June through the beginning of September, we held 96 trips for the at-risk and underprivileged youth population of San Diego County. From surf camps on our local beaches, to longer climbing and backpacking trips into the Sierra Nevada, this was our highest capacity summer to date. In addition to our normal programs, we partnered with the National Military Family Association to facilitate a two week long Operational Purple Camps for 288 children of military personnel actively deployed in war zones. We’d like to thank our volunteers and supporters who helped facilitate all of these amazing experiences for the youth we serve.
Also this summer, the work of Outdoor Outreach was featured on San Diego's Cox 4 news. Click on the image below to view the piece in its entirety.

Outdoor Outreach's New Leaders
The Leadership or LEAD (Leadership Education and Development) Program, Outdoor Outreach’s most comprehensive program is welcoming four new participants this fall. Through an application and interview process, promising teens are selected to participate in an intensive, year-long training that provides them with the skills necessary to instruct and mentor program participants. The program is designed to promote each individual’s natural leadership strengths while providing tangible academic, emotional and social support. Part of this exciting process is giving candidates the opportunity to teach and mentor their peers through a paid internship after completing their training. We continue to monitor these young leaders as they balance their part-time jobs at Outdoor Outreach, college classes, financial independence and the challenges of moving into the world as working adults.
We are pleased to introduce Gaby Hernandez from El Cajon High School, Idris Ahmed and Guillermo Martinez from Crawford High School and Stephanie Munoz from the Toussaint Academy. These four young people have been selected after excelling in our Adventure Clubs. Their natural leadership abilities, desire to become instructors, and love for the outdoors made them stand-out candidates for the program.

Trip Spotlight: Cleveland National Forest Adventure
This summer, Outdoor Outreach partnered with the Cleveland National Forest Service to send 12 participants from our Adventure Clubs to the campgrounds at Palomar Mountain for a weeklong paid work/internship program. Outdoor Outreach staff worked with the Forest Service to create this unique paid internship program where our participating youth worked hard all week on a variety of projects that included trail maintenance, tree plantings, invasive species removal and construction projects. In addition, the Forest Service staff spent the week educating our youth about all of the different career opportunities at the Forest Service. Another component of the internship included a special tour of the world famous Palomar Observatory, complete with an amazing nighttime viewing of the moon and Saturn, as well as a day devoted to working with the Forest Service’s Fire Department. We’d like to thank the Cleveland National Forest and all of the amazing rangers who gave our kids such an amazing opportunity!
