A TIME TO BE THANKFUL

We all know the news has been a little grim of late, with the turbulence of the financial markets and political scenes intensifying.  So BBBSBA thought it would nice to offer a change of focus and share some positive news happening in our community. So we asked some of the Bigs and Littles enrolled in our program (along with their Parent/Guardians) to share their thoughts on how they might fill in the blank of the following sentence:

“What I am most thankful for about having a Big/Little Brother or Sister is___________”

To follow are some of the responses we received – we think they’ll be sure to inspire you and hope these quotes will help kick-off warm thoughts for the upcoming holiday season….

(Note: we received too many responses to print them all, so please watch for more “thankful” quotes in our December issue!)

What I am most thankful for about having a Big Sister is “that I can be with someone besides my family who really cares for me.” – Little Sister Mimi (age 10) about Big Sister Danielle

I am most thankful for “both the excitement on his face and the joy that he brings me every time that I see him!”- Adam H., Big Brother to Kiere (age 7)

I am most thankful for “his moves on the basketball court - he actually inspired me to work on my game for the first time in years!  Keep up those skills, Shon Shon!" -Mark M., Big Brother to DeShon (age 14)

What I am most thankful is the wonderful role models and friends that my sons now have in their lives."   - Carol M., mother of Little Brothers Morgan (14) and Brian (13)

I am most thankful  for (my Little Sister) not being afraid to be who she is and sharing part of her life with me    - Michelle D., Big Sister to Symphanee (age 15)

What I’m most thankful for is that “there could not have been a better match for Jarrod. Cristhian has been an amazing friend and influence on my son.”    - Lesa M., mother of Little Brother Jarrod (age 14)

I’m thankful “that I have someone to talk to about anything and take me places so I'm not just bored in my house all the time”  - Little Brother Jarrod (age 14) about Big Brother Cristhian

I’m thankful for “getting to spend time with Little Tina who is such a joy in my life!  I Love You Tina!!”   – Sheila C., Big Sister to Tina (age 11)

 BBBSBA ANNUAL MATCH PICNIC

On Saturday, September 20th, Big Brothers Big Sisters of the Bay Area held its annual picnic at Lake Elizabeth in Fremont.  This year’s event was attended by nearly 175 participants including Bigs, Littles and their families, volunteers, staff and agency supporters for a fun filled day of food, games, crafts and friendship.   Matches were able to spend time together enjoying a variety of activities including traditional picnic favorites such as arts & crafts, balloon animals and face painting, as well as some new activities such as belly dancing lessons, hula hoop classes, and the very popular stilt walking lessons!  Other matches challenged each at sporting events including volleyball, football, and sack races.  Meanwhile, staff and volunteers pitched in to grill up hamburgers, hot dogs, and veggie dogs, ensuring Bigs and Littles kept their energy up so the fun could last all afternoon!

Needless to say, the day was a great success and we owe much thanks to all those who donated items, services or funding to make this event possible.  Special thanks goes to Pacific Service Credit Union for their underwriter sponsorship of the Annual Picnic.  For those who were unable to join in the fun in September, we hope to see you at the next BBBSBA Match event – our annual Holiday Party sponsored by the San Francisco Elks Club – being held on Dec. 14th !

 SAN JOSE 1/2 MARATHON

Five long months of training and commitment sure paid off for members of the Inaugural BBBSBA Marathon Team on October 5th, as ALL 25 TEAMMATES CROSSED THE FINISH LINE after completing the 13.1 miles of the San Jose Rock ’n Roll Marathon!

Not only do the team members all deserve big congratulations for such dedication and great physical achievement, but they also collectively raised nearly $22,000on behalf of BBBSBA to support our youth mentoring services… please join BBBSBA in congratulating each of them on this outstanding accomplishment!  Special kudos to our top fundraisers: Barbara Scotlan of Wells Fargo, Big Sister Nancy Tung, Big Brother Matthew Curtis, and the Safeway Hispanic Network.  A Big thank you also goes to Team Coach Robert Mills and his Club 26.2 coaches, whose exceptional leadership and instruction helped thoroughly prepared the entire BBBSBA team for the race, and made it such a rewarding experience that many said they intend to do it again next year!

In addition to the team’s race efforts, BBBSBA also had a booth at the 2-day Pre-event Marathon to highlight our agency’s programs and services to the thousands of local participants.  Volunteer Bigs and Littles helped staff run the booth which featured a giant prize wheel and free goodies to hand out, thanks to the generous support of Epicentro marketing.

The BBBSBA Marathon Training program was a tremendous success on many levels, and we look forward to being able to expand on that success in years to come.  We’re hoping some of you may even make it be your New Year’s Resolution to join the team when training begins this summer for the 2009 Marathon!
