Shalom Torah Academy

May 16, 2011

Dear Parents:

Over the past year, the Board of Directors of our school and our Executive Director, Rabbi Avrohom Gutman, have taken the time to seriously study the business of running this school and determine what it will take to build a fiscally strong foundation that will facilitate growth in the long term- not just year by year. They took a hard look at what is required to assure the future of Shalom for decades to come.

It is no surprise that current economic conditions have caused many schools to suffer huge financial losses and sadly, caused the closing of others. To assure this will not happen to STA, in January, the Board of Directors began a serious financial review. It studied many options and therefore concluded that the best decision to promote financial strength is to combine both of the Shalom Torah locations into one campus (located in Twin Rivers) starting September 2011. The board determined it would be necessary to consolidate in the short term to guarantee growth in the long term.

The logical choice to lead this combined Shalom Torah Academy is the current Head of School in Twin Rivers, Rabbi Yaakov Freedman, who has been with Shalom Torah Academy since its inception over thirty years ago. I cannot think of any other principal who I would feel more comfortable with as Rabbi Freedman who is more than qualified and capable to continue the vision and mission I developed, here in Morganville, over the last two years. In conjunction with Mrs. Nora Horn, General Studies Principal, you can be assured that your children's education will continue to flourish.

The Board of Directors at Shalom and other community leaders all feel that the successful growth of OUR school, and the other Jewish Day Schools in this area, is directly tied to the availability of a great high school so that our students' options are not limited to commuting very long distances to attend a religious school, or to go to a public school. Even before the decision to consolidate STA was made, I was called upon to give of my time and energy in assisting this great venture – to create a high school that will offer both Torah scholarship and academic excellence.

If we can all agree that a strong high school is needed here in Central New Jersey, then you can imagine how excited I was when I was given the opportunity, by the Rambam founding members, to take my philosophy and vision of education to a whole new level as its new Head of School. Now, when your children graduate Shalom Torah Academy I will still have the privilege of guiding them as they grow, both academically and religiously, into the great men and women I know they will be.

I look forward with great excitement to seeing STA flourish and grow and for this opportunity to continue our relationship as partners in your children's Jewish education.
