| Inspiration Award Honorees BBBSBA’s largest annual fundraiser, The BIG Event 2009 Dinner & Auction, will be taking place on Thursday, April 2 at the Palace Hotel in San Francisco. One of the features of this annual gala is the presentation of the INSPIRATION AWARD to two featured matches whose relationships stand as symbols of the positive impacts and lasting friendships that take place through our mentoring programs. This year, Big Brothers Big Sisters of the Bay Area is proud to announce the 2009 Inspiration Award recipients: Big Brother Matt Frederick/Little Brother Trinidad and Big Sister Dawn Kruger/Little Sister Olivia. Matt and Trinidad's Story Trinidad was just 6 years old when he was introduced to his Big Brother, Matt. He was ecstatic about getting a Big Brother from the beginning and they hit it off very early on in their relationship. They would meet up every week and do all kinds of activities together, with early favorites being riding bikes, playing T-Ball and going to 49ers games together. Even when Matt moved out of state for a 6-month period, they still maintained their close relationship. Trinidad would regularly receive postcards in the mail and emails from his Big Brother, so that as soon as Matt moved back to San Francisco, they picked up right where they left off, meeting every week and becoming more like brothers every day. After more than 6 years of being matched and withstanding the tests of time and distance, their bond is stronger than ever. And according to Trinidad’s mom, the two are more than just a good match. She proudly attests that “Matt is part of the family.” Dawn and Olivia’s Story Some may know Dawn as the Program Manager for BBBSBA, but may not have realized that she initially began her association with the agency in 2001 when she became a Big Sister to Olivia. Over the past 7 years of their relationship, Dawn has been there to provide support and be a friend in good times and bad. On a typical outing, they will bond over reading celebrity magazines in a book store or sharing their plans for the future over dinner at a restaurant. Their restaurant dinners may have fueled Olivia’s interest in becoming a future chef and Dawn has been there for her to provide guidance and support for this career choice, encouraging Olivia to visit different culinary schools in the Bay Area. Dawn has watched Olivia grow into the mature young lady she is today, and continues to encourage her Little Sister to achieve her future goals.Congratulations to both matches for reaching such a milestone in their relationship. If you would like to hear more about Matt, Trinidad, Dawn and Olivia, join us for the 3rd Annual BIG Event where they will take the stage to share their stories. (See Information Below) |

Marcia Hodges named new CEO at BBBSBA![]() As you may have seen in last month’s newsletter, Marcia Hodges assumed CEO duties at BBBSBA effective January 5, 2009. Marcia brings with her a wealth of nonprofit knowledge, leadership, experience with youth development…and a unique history: from 1983 – 1998, Marcia served as Executive Director for Big Brothers Big Sisters of the East Bay (prior to the consolidation of the three Bay Area BBBS chapters to form BBBSBA). In her fifteen years at BBBS East Bay, Marcia earned a stellar reputation as an exceptionally capable and committed leader who brought tremendous passion and energy to the agency. She left BBBS 10 years ago to pursue expanded leadership roles with other environmental and youth-focused non-profits, including her most recent position as Chief Operating Officer for the YMCA of the East Bay. Marcia’s direct and comprehensive experience with Big Brothers Big Sister, her passion for the work, and her demonstrated qualities of leadership will serve the organization well in the coming years. The staff and board of BBBSBA are thrilled to welcome her to the team – and we hope you will feel free to join us in welcoming Marcia to the agency! She can be e-mailed directly at mhodges@bbbsba.org and is looking forward to hearing from you. |
