A Shift to Managed IT Services- Lesser burden more cost savings

Whenever the CIO goes with an IT purchase requisition to the management, some of the most common statements that are heard are “What’s the burning need to purchase this solution now? How will this solution help our business?” etc but the most interesting one is “I think we need more productivity from our IT teams, else some rationalization might be required”.

These statements have become even more routine post the economic slow- down last year.  We saw many paradigms shifts in IT spending patterns, and the order of the day was to spend on technologies that would help save costs, improve efficiency, and customer service.

Though we’re seeing early signs of recovery now, it has already brought many significant changes to the market, and how IT operates in the market. OPEX has gained preference over CAPEX, Digital Communication has become more preferred over actual travelling, and servicing existing customers is more important than developing new ones.

New technologies and trends have emerged to cater to these changing requirements, and one of them is Managed IT services- The process of out sourcing the management of certain parts of your IT infrastructure to third parties. The term itself doesn’t need any intro as organizations have been outsourcing their systems and network management to third parties for years now. But what’s important is that now you can outsource much more than the basic elements of the IT infrastructure.

Moreover, while cost saving is definitely considered as the benefit of out- sourcing, there are many others that one needs to be aware of.

Today, you can outsource just over every part of IT infrastructure or even the whole IT infrastructure-Total Outsourcing. The latest additions to this hot market are managed unified communications services, storage, security, DR and business continuity and several others. For long, organizations have been skeptical about outsourcing these facilities, due to reasons like data security, etc, but the slowdown has forced everyone to reconsider their decisions.

A recent survey  with 40 key CIO’s and IT decision makers from mid to large organization suggests that there’s a clear need for managed IT services in the market. Over 80% of the respondents were already using the same and 60% were actively looking out to outsource even more.

There are many core benefits of using managed IT services: Once a part of your IT infrastructure has been outsourced you don’t have to worry about assigning day to day tasks to individuals. Instead, you have to focus on ensuring that the guidelines defined in your SLA’s are followed.
