FAMILY RECIPES NEEDED

Hello! For our eighth grade project we have decided to collect yummy (preferably local and organic) family recipes and combine them into a cookbook that will be made available to the SES community. The money collected will be put towards lowering the cost for the eighth grade marine biology trip to the Catalina islands near the end of the ’09-’10 school year.

Please include the title, ingredients, method/process, and any family story you’d like to share related to the recipe. If you have adapted the recipe from an existing cookbook, please include the original source. If you would like to include a picture of the completed dish, it would be well appreciated.

The deadline for sending in your family recipes is September 20, 2009, but the sooner the better! You can email your recipes to: sesfamilyfood@gmail.com

Thanks!--Emma Childs and Georgia Tucker

NE Carpool Needed:

We are looking for a family or families with which to carpool.  My daugher, 6th grade, needs a ride home about 4 days/week.  I am happy to drive your children to school each morning and could bring home 1 afternoon/week.  Any of those days are flexible; my biggest need is to get Jordan home after school.  If you are interested, please call Teri @ 503-753-9335.   Thanks.

SWAP SHOP AND ROOST OPEN HOUSE: Whether you have just one child at SES or several and especially if you have middle schoolers or younger than school age siblings, please check out the information on the SES website about the open house this Friday for all the programs of the Sunnyside Swap Shop Co-op including the new Roost program for middle schoolers.  The Open house starts right after school at 3pm and goes until 9pm.  All during the year there are K-2 field trips and middle school service projects that revolve around activities inside the historical stone church building that houses the Swap Shop right across the park from SES.  Today is a great day to walk through and see everything first hand.  Busy today?  Weekend open houses happening Saturday, Sept 19 and Saturday, October 3 9am-3pm.

KEEPING IT ALL CLOSE BY: For more information on DoJump circus arts classes (all ages) in walking distance from SES and the MUSE after school band program (4th grade and above) at SES, see descriptions on the SES website or go to www.dojump.org and www.museband.com

A PLACE FOR YOUR ELECTRONICS THAT DON'T WORK: If you've been wondering what to do with the old clock radio or random computer parts, outdated VCR or broken blow dryer.  The students using The Roost after school programming with Camp Fire through the Sunnyside Swap Shop Co-op have been really enjoying taking apart old equipment and repurposing the parts.  If you have items to unload (that are not, to your knowledge, toxic in any way), please place them in a bag or a box marked with the word ROOST and drop them off on the Yamhill Street side of the Sunnyside Methodist Church building under The Roost banner at the top of the stone steps.

KINDERMUSIK FOR FREE: Free September demo classes for a new Kindermusik program for toddlers and preschoolers starting up in October inside the Sunnyside Methodist Church building.  Demo classes Mondays 9/14 and 21, Friday 9/18   9 - 9:30am with Angie  www.kindermusikwithangie.kindermusik.net   503-708-2827

A Note From Our New Librarian

Hi, my name is Kathryn Kohl and I am the new half-time library assistant.  I am super excited to be part of the school, and I hope to get to meet you all soon.  In addition to working at Sunnyside I am a reference librarian for Clackamas County and Mt. Hood Community College, so I should be able to help with your students' research/reference needs as the progress through the school year!

To give you a brief update on the SES library - we're going to stay closed for a few weeks to inventory the collection, order some new books, and organize the volunteers for a great school year.  My main goals for this year are getting the classrooms into the library for class visits (now that we have a wall!  Thank you Rhonda, Randy and everyone else who helped!), integrating more with the public library and the classroom curriculum, updating the collection with some new titles, and general promotion of the library; I want to entice everyone to come visit the library

Thank you, and welcome to the 2009-2010 school year!

Family Directory:
We are busy working on the Family Directory so that it can be printed in October. If you were included in the Directory last year but need any info updated, please email me directly at neeley@dnld.net.

If you have never had your info in the directory, but would like to, click on this link: DIRECTORY PDF. You can copy the format and email it back if you want. Just be sure that the information doesn’t get jumbled by format changes. I would like to receive these changes/additions by September 18th.

He has lots of black hair! He's so cute and adorable and lovely. Hope the beginning of the school year is going well for everyone. I'm thinking of you all and wishing you a great start to the year. Tell everyone I said hi! :) Lauren

School Grounds Reminder for You and Your Dogs: The entire block: school, gardens, grounds--even the field--are on-leash only areas. Please do not allow your dog to run free on school grounds, even if there are no kids playing outside. The school and the larger community are working to create a safe environment on the grounds. But it is difficult for the school to ask for change when parents are not following the rules. If you see a dog off leash, please, respectfully, ask the owner to follow the rules!

PPS Notification: All PPS schools are to publicize the District Parent/Student Complaint Policy. That policy is available at:  http://www.pps.k12.or.us/directives-c/pol-reg/4/50/030_P.pdf or in the SES office.

Safer Routes To School: Let’s Begin the Year Walking and Rolling!

Get out those walking shoes and pump up your bike tires!  With the beginning of the new school year, now is the time for students and families to set healthy and fun habits about how you get to and from school.

There are many ways to establish active habits today.  Determine specific days each week or month that you will walk or roll to school. Make it a social event and coordinate your commute with neighbors or other families.  If getting to school car-free is not possible, try driving part way and walking the last 2 to 4 blocks.

Together, let’s join millions around the world in the International Walk + Bike to School Day on Wednesday, October 7th.  Register our school at www.walknbike.org.

For more information or for help getting started, contact Clay Veka at 503-823-4998 or clay.veka@trans.ci.portland.or.us.
