Drum roll please... our August Summer Book Club will feature Harlem Summer by Walter Dean Myers! This is a great book for all our historians, but especially our older ones. Have you ever wanted to have a relaxing summer but it didn't quite turn out that way? Well, your summer probably didn't get as crazy as 16-year-old Mark Purvis' in this “humorous coming-of-age story” that “reflects the paradoxically playful yet dangerous atmosphere of the 1920s” (Publisher's Weekly). Mark just wants to have fun, but he finds himself torn between the “new Negroes” at the Crisis magazine office and the shadowy underworld of bootlegging.
