This prompted conservative columnist Ann Coulter to point out that sometimes firing non-peforming or poorly performing employees is the only sane thing to do, particularly if they work for the government!

FROM THE EVP: 2012 A Dramatic Year Ahead
Looking ahead, 2012 is shaping up to be a busy and eventful year.  With the presidential campaign season in full swing, the airwaves are filled with punches, counter-punches and plenty of commentary on the fighters.  The primaries are only a warm-up bout for the main event in November, which by all measures should be one of the most contentious in recent history.

Forest landowners and the forest industry have more at stake in the November outcome than at any time in my lifetime.  A second Obama administration would likely result in:
  • Another 4 years of an out-of-control regulatory machine churning out job-killing environmental regulations.
  • Implementation of currently promulgated Clean Air Act rules including Boiler MACT likely resulting in the shut down of US (including Alabama) mills with the loss of timber markets and thousands of jobs AND Utility MACT likely resulting in the shuttering of numerous coal-burning power plants resulting in skyrocketing energy bills.
  • A shift in the Supreme Court to a 5-4 (or worse) liberal majority.  (Remember that the Lynch Case has been appealed to the 11th Circuit and may wind up in the Supreme Court where a liberal majority might rule in the plaintiffs favor.)
Moving beyond our parochial concerns, a second Obama term could likely see an ever- shrinking military, expanding entitlement programs, expanding federal bureaucracy, and an ever-growing US debt.  To say that the November elections are critical is a gross understatement.

In Alabama, there are only a handful of statewide offices on the ballot.  Most important are the judicial elections where we will be electing 5 Supreme Court Justices, including the Chief Justice, and 3 judges each for the Court of Civil Appeals and the Court of Criminal Appeals.  In the near future, we will be communicating our endorsements for these races and will provide information about each of the endorsed candidates.

In the interim, the 2012 Legislative Session will begin on February 6th.  Senate President Pro-Tem Del Marsh has indicated the Senate Republican leadership will focus on the 3 “E’s”:  employment, education and efficiency.  Echoing that theme, House Speaker Mike Hubbard stated, “We have a three facet focus for 2012:  boosting private sector job growth, improving schools through education reform and making government more efficient.”

We whole-heartedly support these priorities and will work with the leadership to support their efforts.  In addition, our “pine tree” agenda includes rural road and bridge funding, county road ordinances, green building, and state tax treatment of reforestation expenses.  Over the last year, we have been discussing with the Governor and other state officials ways to provide funding for replacement or rehabilitation of an ever-increasing number of weight-restricted rural bridges.  Based on recent press comments by the Governor, we are encouraged that we are moving forward on this initiative.

In the coming weeks, we will keep you informed and will let you know when you can help.  As we have in the past, AFA will continue to be your eyes and ears in the state Legislature and beyond, but there will be times when we need you to add your voice to the process.  Remember; NEVER underestimate the importance of your voice and your vote!!
