A new telephone scam is now well and truly on the radar where a person claims to be from Microsoft or another well-known company and advising you that your computer has "a problem". If they succeed, you will end up being charged $295 for what we charge $65 for, which is a full system claim and virus check, including tidying up the Registry. The biggest concern appears to be the capacity for this company to subsequently charge your credit card.
Can your computer take dictation?
Over the last several years we have seen the development of several products which enable computers to take dictation. The release of Dragon NaturallySpeaking version 11 over the last month or so has seen the price dropped to below $300, with an increase in accuracy which is beyond measurement.

Reduce your telephone bill by up to 70%
You have probably heard people talking about VoIP systems, and wondered what it was all about. Very briefly, Voice over Internet Protocol, is a system which allows us to use the Internet to make phone calls at enormously reduced prices, because they do not use the switching systems associated with the big telcos. Essentially, each telephone has its own address on the Internet and to make a call to one, the system switches you through the Internet rather than through an exchange.
There is no installation cost with this, the equipment comes in the mail and you just plug it in to your router. Monthly costs are between $4.95 per month and $29.95 per month, with national calls costing between $.10 untimed on the $4.95 plan, down to 01 $29.95 plan. Mobile calls range from $.17 per minute with no flag fall, compared with the general rate on a landline and $.38 per 30 seconds plus flag fall.

New on-phone scam:
You may have heard recently in the news about a scam which appears to originate in India, where a caller identified themselves as coming from Microsoft or another organisation you may have heard of, advising you that you have problems with your computer.
The caller starts by identifying themselves as being from fairly high profile company and advising you that your computer has a problem, which they are able to help with. They initially take you into Control Panel and then through to the event viewer, which is the area of your computer that we as IT Support people utilise, to find out what your machine has been doing which is causing you problems. This area as a general rule will have thousands of problems listed, some going back to win the computer was built. It is quite regular to find 60 to 70,000 problems listed in this area.
The scam as such is that they charge you $295 to correct the issues, which under normal circumstances we would correct during our "Daycare" process. The major difference of course is that we charge $65 for the same service,
Our advice of course is always to be wary of people ringing you on the phone and offering things which you have not requested, and also take your credit card details. To date I have not heard of any situation where the credit card was hit again, however, that capacity does exist and you should be aware of giving your credit card details over the phone to somebody that you can't ring if there is a problem.
