IT folks use cloud outlines for diagramming networks and so "the cloud" became a
metaphor for the Internet. When a user accesses applications on the Internet through
a web browser or desktop or mobile app while the software and data are stored on
servers at a remote location they are "in the cloud." Cloud computing entrusts services
with a user's data, software and computation over a network. Adobe's new Creative
Cloud, which we covered in the last issue of Digest, is just one of a growing number of
cloud-based applications now being offered for designers, brand owners, marketers and
printers. A few new ones were announced at drupa 2012. MORE |

Apple's marketing via Hollywood has meant mastering the
art of product placement. Carefully casting the brand in a
flattering light, Apple increased its appearances on television
from 613 placements in 2009 to 891 times in 2011, per
Nielsen, and made cameo appearances in 40% of the top
movies, according to Brandchannel. Jon Holtzman, who is
in charge of the program for Apple, goes so far as to claim
credit for Brian De Palma directing the first "Mission: Impossible" movie and Tom Cruise starring
in it, by virtue of a product-placement-for-marketing deal that saved the production a half
million dollars. MORE
