Dr. Malcolm Keif and Professor Kevin Cooper of Cal Poly State University, San Luis Obispo recently completed their third book on the topic of Lean Management for the printing industry. Their newest title, "Setup Reduction for Printers: A Practical Guide for Reducing Makeready Time in Print Manufacturing" can be purchased directly at https://www.createspace.com/3663543. This new work is a must read for any printer looking to embark on a lean journey and improve their cost efficiency to more effectively compete in today's conditions. This title follows in the footsteps of "Lean Printing: Pathway to Success and Lean Printing: Cultural Imperatives to Success," which are both available and bundled with the new title as a set through the Printing Industries Press Online Store at http://www.printing.org/node/9830?c=38786. MORE Blogging for Printing Impressions, Kelly Mallozzi writes, "I think printers should be printers. I don't think it's a good idea to try to reinvent yourself as a marketing service provider and run the risk of alienating potential customers who are marketers. I know I am probably very unpopular right now, having said that, and I expect a lot of you out there will disagree. That's OK. Very simply, just be who you are. Don't let anyone else tell you who you are supposed to be, or what you HAVE to do in order to stay alive today. Bollocks! … Now, having said all that, I DO believe you should learn as much about marketing as you can. MORE Join the Visual Media Alliance Trip to DRUPA from May 8-11 Want a chance to visit DRUPA? MORE Writing for PrintWeek.com David Ward, San Diego, reports that Océ is expanding its services side. PrintExpress will operate 24/7, requires no software other than a web browser and provides consistent pricing and output even for companies with offices across the country. PrintExpress offers on demand print that enables companies with a deadline to submit print jobs as late as 10pm for next day delivery. It also features "The Publishing Market Place," which enables companies to create an online storefront through which their customers or employees can order print materials when needed. MORE Media & Publishing reports that as newspapers and magazines struggle to find solutions to decreasing audiences–a problem driven by competition from digital media–Switzerland-based Paperboy hopes to offer a solution, with a smartphone app that uses image recognition technology so users can easily share, save and digitally explore content from printed media. MORE Cal Poly's 2012 International Printing Week program, titled Expressive Technologies–A Look into the Future of Graphic Communication, will be held Tuesday through Friday, Jan. 24-27. This annual event commemorates Benjamin Franklin's birthday and his contributions to printing, publishing and communication. The four-day event will include presentations by experts and industry leaders, a Graphic Communication Career Fair and a banquet. It is one of the largest and most comprehensive International Printing Week events in the nation, according to Harvey Levenson, head of Cal Poly's Graphic Communication Department.
