You may have already taken steps to take control of your hearing health by visiting our practice and utilizing our services. If so, we applaud you for being proactive about your hearing wellness—but what about the hearing wellness of your loved ones? New evidence suggests that hearing loss is more widespread than previously believed, and that people of all ages stand to benefit from regular hearing health checkups.

A newly released study by Johns Hopkins University now confirms that 1 in 5 Americans—about 48 million people, or 20.3 percent of the U.S. population—have a hearing loss in at least one ear. This number far exceeds the previous estimate of 25 million.
What is the reason behind this jump in numbers?
In the past, researchers were able to focus
only on people of specific ages and locations. This time around, researchers were able to study a much broader sample of the population, using data culled from the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey. Male and female subjects from all across the country, ages 12 and above, were studied over an eight-year period.

The study also reveals that the prevalence of hearing loss appears to double by decade with each age group examined in the study.

Please encourage your loved ones to schedule a hearing exam this holiday season.
